I finished Evan's chef costume for Halloween. I think he actually might wear the top and the french fry pants since he's starting to understand that kids dress up on Halloween. I have been reiterating to him that in order to get candy like the other kids, you have to wear THIS costume and carry a little wooden spoon and maybe a little strainer basket for your candy. He wouldn't let the puffy chef hat come within a foot of him, so it's probably safe to say he won't wear it on Halloween. Too bad, because it's mighty cute. I might embroider "Chef Evan" on his top so people know what he's supposed to be, since without the signature hat he kind of looks like an elevator operator or busboy.
Any ideas in the comments for making his costume more "chef-like," without the puffy hat?

He's so cute Allison!! I would suggest an apron maybe but it would cover up the pants....Croca ala Mario Batali are the oly other things i can think of! lol
Great costume! A neckerchief might help?
Maybe he would go for the idea of using the hat for his candy sack?
"Practicing" ahead of time might help...
Good luck!
What about putting a little pocket on the jacket and having him have a spatula or wooden spoon or something in it? Of course, you could wear the hat, and he might decide you look silly and decide to wear it :-). It's super-cute either way.
Food stains! Let him eat dinner in his costume before he goes trick or treating. And if he's not messy enough, let him come over here for dinner and my kids will get food on him.
I love the pants. I agree on the comment before on crocs (if he has them) and an apron and using the hat for the candy.
Evan looks so cute in his chef outfit! I think people will realize that is what he is without the hat - the modern chefs like Gordon Ramsay don't wear chef hats - just the white jacket.

I agree with Quinn...let him use the hat for a candy sack.
He looks adorable. My son knew what Evan was dressed up as, as soon as he saw the pictures.
Thank you so much for all the great ideas! I think I'll use several of them. Love the chef hat as candy basket - brilliant! Easy to put a handle on it, too.
Oh, he is adorable! Awesome job on the costume, Allison.
Super cute! I especially love the french fry pants. Maybe you could embroider Chef Evan on the jacket? and maybe the name of his "restaurant", too!
How cute!
That is absolutely adorable! What a great idea!
Too darned cute! We have the same "hat" issue, although Oliver's costume will be easily identified without it.
