Evan doesn't seem to like fireworks, at least ones that are close and loud, so our plans are to spend the day at my parents' house. My brother Will will be coming over as well, and it will be a day of BBQ, badminton and hanging out with family.
From years past, my favorite 4th of July memory was in 1976, for the US Bicentennial. I was 5 years old. At that time, we lived in Washington D.C. and my Dad worked for President Ford's administration. The fireworks show was, at the time, the biggest in history, and we got to watch it from the windows of my Dad's office building near the White House. There was a big viewing party and lots of families and kids. I remember hiding behind the curtains and watching the show, amazed and mesmerized by all the colors and lights. Even 33 years later, the happy memories of that night are clear.
Happy 4th of July everyone!

Hi Allison - I'm a frequent lurker and infrequent commenter... but I had to tell you my story about the bicentennial. I was also 5 and my family went to my grandparents house in norther MN. I was the youngest in the family by a lot. My older cousins created their own fireworks show for us outside. Everyone else was watching the show and enjoying themselves. I was selected to operate the keg! I'll never forget that night either. It's funny how different our experiences were one that one 4th of July.
OK, my bicentennial 4th of July experience: My Dad had a boat, we went with many other friends on their boats out into the ocean off Marina del Rey in Los Angeles. There were fireworks from all the piers, Malibu, Santa Monica and Venice. Fireworks from Burton Chace Park in the Marina. Many of the boats in the harbor had fireworks too. I must say I was a tad older than 5 (try 24) and it was the most spectacular fireworks display I've ever seen. It was so great seeing the displays from multiple locations all at the same time, rockin' in the Pacific Ocean. I'll never forget it! Thanks for reminding me, Allison!
