When Jeff and I were engaged and went around Bed Bath & Beyond with the little scan gun to add items to our registry, I looked at him strangely when he scanned a Breadman bread machine. "Really? A bread machine? When on earth will we have time to make bread?" Apparently, that is the point of a bread machine. Besides the Kitchen Aid Mixer, it's the #1 appliance we use in our house. I hardly buy commercial bread anymore. (Do you know they put high fructose corn syrup in most commercial breads? Even the "healthy" ones. Why does bread need corn syrup?!)
With the holidays upon us, I am going through 5 pound bags of bread flour like Armageddon is on its way. I love making bread. And who doesn't love receiving freshly-baked bread wrapped in a hand embroidered kitchen towel as a hostess gift?
Herb & Cheese Bread - Bread Machine Recipe
Based loosely off a recipe from my favorite bread machine cookbook, BHG's Biggest Book of Bread Machine Recipes
1 1/4 cups milk, heated for 1 minute in microwave
1/3 shredded sharp cheddar cheese
3 cups bread flour
1 tbsp olive oil
1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese (or Parmesan/Romano blend)
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp dried onion flakes or powder
1 tsp dried dill
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp crushed dried rosemary
2 tsp active dry yeast
Add all ingredients to the bread machine pan. Select the basic white bread cycle.

That receipe sounds fantastic. I've been thinking of getting a bread maker but with all the options it's hard to pick one. Any suggestions??
We love our bread machine! We have the Breadman Deluxe Rapid Bread Machine. It's about $75.
I loved my bread machine, but was frustrated when my whole wheat bread never turned out. I ended up giving my machine to my mom. Have you ever tried making whole wheat bread? Does it work for you?

I figured out the issue with whole wheat bread. I use half regular bread flour and half whole wheat. The wheat bread never rises properly and it turns out like a brick if I only use wheat flour. I can post that recipe too.
We make whole wheat bread all the time and it doesn't come out like a brick with our panasonic machine. I use a little more water than in the white recipes and the recipes that came with the machine recommend adding 1/4 tsp vitamin C which I do.
I've been using my Breadman Ultimate since we received it as a wedding gift in 1999 (we're divorced now) and it's still going. I think the motor is finally dying, though. I've made at least one loaf per week since early 1999, often more, usually whole wheat.
I found that you CAN make whole wheat bread, without using half white flour, by adding wheat gluten. A tablespoon to 1/4 cup, depending on how dense your bread is. I'd be happy to share my version, if you contact me.
One of my tricks, though, is I only use King Arthur flour. Nothing else is as reliable (imho). Their White Whole Wheat flour is my family's favorite. It's light, whole grain, and cooks up fluffy.
Is there a big difference between bread flour and all purpose flour? We just got a bread maker as a wedding gift and we're loving it. But even with the addition of wheat gluten, our bread isn't as fluffy as what you have pictured.
Thanks!
I usually double the amount of yeast in most posted recipes. It really helps. Also, I do only use bread flour. Personally I don't know what the difference is but it seems to work great.
